BAY COUNTY, MI - The drug smuggled into the Bay County Jail last week that killed one inmate and sickened several others is believed to be a form of methadone, said Sheriff John E. Miller. The drug, smuggled in by a man who was sentenced to jail, was distributed to at least three cellmates in a cell block last week. Miller said the drug was in a balloon in the inmate's rectum. Miller said methadone, a synthetic form of heroin, may have been laced with some other drug but results of a toxicology test won't be available for several weeks. The drug was responsible for the death of Richard Walter Born, 34, of Bay City, who was found in his bunk on Thursday morning. A 30-year-old inmate who was unconscious was taken to Bay Regional Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition. Another inmate was severely ill from the drug but was not hospitalized and was treated in the jail by medical personnel. Miller said detectives are continuing to gather evidence and may file murder charges against the inmate who smuggled in the drug. |
