TOLEDO, OH - Nora Wallace, 33, pleaded no contest and signed a plea deal to an attempted theft charge. Wallace stole more than $48,000 from inmates at the jail.
She stole thousands of dollars from inmates at the Lucas County jail. Today, a Toledo woman takes responsibility for her actions. Nora Wallace, 33, pleaded no contest and signed a plea deal to an attempted theft charge. Wallace stole more than $48,000 from inmates at the jail.
Her attorney says she is ashamed of what she has done and says she stole the money to support her boyfriend.
"Her boyfriend lost his job. She was the only one bringing in any money, expenses were exceeding income and she kind of went over board."
Detectives say Wallace also had a drug problem. Wallace was employed by Intellitech Corporation, a company contracted with the Lucas County Sheriff's office to collect money from inmates booked in the jail for it's "pay to stay" program.
In January, jail administrators noticed a tremendous amount of money missing. Detectives say they questioned Wallace and she admitted to crime.
Wallace was the only person in the department who handled inmate money.
According to court documents Wallace would tear the slip up in her office with the documentation of money received from the inmates, and throw the paper work in the garbage.
Detectives believe from January to May of this year she stole $48,791.09, a debt Wallace has agreed to payback to her company so they can pay the sheriff's office.
"She knows she did something wrong. She wants to take responsibility and is very sorry."
The sheriff's office is conducting an internal audit to determine exactly how much money was taken.
