The infamous Summit View Detention Center opened its doors to inmates again last Monday after being shut down for 2 years. The State of Nevada is now running the juvenile facility after disastrous management by a private company, which resulted in a riot in 2001. Twelve inmates are at the facility now and there will soon be a total of 24 there. The state believes that the problems that existed in the past at Summit View will not happen again. The problems inside Summit View came to light on June 1, 2001 when 20 teens rioted on the roof of the facility. The high-level youth offender program had been in operation for more than a year under a private company --Youth Services International. And the teens were rioting in part because of the conditions inside. KLAS Eyewitness News uncovered documents showing that laundry hadn't been done for 7 months at the facility and that 2 female prison officers were arrested on 6 counts of sexual assault against 2 inmates. The company pulled out of its contract with the state 6 months later. The building has been empty until Jan. 26 with the arrival of 12 new inmates who were serving time at a private facility in Tennessee and northern Nevada. The State says they are ready to take over the program. There are 42 new employees who have had 5 weeks of training. No personnel who worked with the former operator, Youth Services International, are working at the facility now. |
