ATLANTA, GA - The former head of the Georgia prison system is set to begin six months behind bars for taking bribes. A Fulton County, Ga., judge ordered Bobby Whitworth to report to a federal prison in Florida on June 12, denying his request to serve his sentence in the Gwinnett County Jail near his home, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Judge Ural Glanville also denied Whitworth treatment as a first offender, which in Georgia would have expunged his conviction once he served his sentence. Whitworth, who headed the prison system from 1990 to 1993, was convicted of taking $75,000 while he was on the state Board of Pardons and Paroles, from a company that wanted to influence legislation. The state Supreme Court declined to hear Whitworth's appeal of his conviction. |
