OK considers charging inmates

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - Oklahoma City officials are considering a plan to charge jail inmates for the cost of keeping them in jail.

The proposal to be voted on by the City Council tomorrow night would charge city inmates $150 for the first and last day they're in jail and $35 a day for the other days.

The city doesn't have its own jail and pays Oklahoma County $37.95 per inmate per day.

Only those convicted on city charges would be required to pay and the city expects only about 25 percent of convicted inmates to pay the fees. Prisoners will be able to argue they should be exempted for financial reasons.
