LITTLEROCK, WA - Inmates broke several windows in a living unit at the Cedar Creek Corrections Center in a disturbance that led to a lockdown this weekend, the Department of Corrections said. State troopers and Thurston County sheriff's deputies backed up officers Saturday until order was restored. No one was injured. Officers moved about 200 inmates into the prison yard to separate inmates who caused the disturbance from the rest of the population. They are being transferred from the minimum-security prison to the medium-security state corrections center at Shelton, Department of Corrections spokeswoman Vicki Loete said. Operations at the prison were back to normal by Sunday afternoon. Prison officials said the incident began when an inmate who complained he had not received his mail on time threw human waste into a staff station. Another offender objected to having to clean it up and grabbed a fire extinguisher and broke out a window. Two other offenders joined him in breaking out other windows, according to the department. "It's usually pretty quiet here. Our offenders are usually about 18 months from getting out," said Loete. |
