Inmate captured 14 hours after escape

COLUMBIA, SC - An inmate who walked away early Tuesday from the Campbell Pre-Release Center was caught later that day near a Columbia apartment complex.

Jason Hickman, 23, was caught at Forest Drive and Two Notch Road, near Gonzales Gardens apartments, about 3:15 p.m., according to state Department of Corrections officials.

Hickman was placed in the Special Management Unit of the Broad River Correctional Institution, a maximum-security prison.

Hickman was serving a nearly three-year sentence on a grand larceny charge in Lexington County. He also was serving a 30-day sentence for receiving stolen property in Richland County.

The inmate escaped about 1:30 a.m.
