PENSACOLA, FL - An inmate with a history of mental illness died after he was shot twice with a stun gun at the Escambia County Jail, deputies said. Jerry Preyer, 45, of Pensacola, died Tuesday night at Baptist Hospital after the incident, Escambia County Sheriff Ron McNesby said.

Preyer became combative and was strapped in a restraint chair. He calmed down in the chair, but got aggressive after he was let out. Deputies then tried to restrain him and shot him with a stun gun twice to subdue him, McNesby said.

Authorities called paramedics after he showed signs of delirium. The medical examiner is investigating his cause of death. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Escambia County Sheriff's Office are also investigating the incident.
