Legislation: hope for former youth prison

LANSING, MI - There's hope for the future of the former Michigan Youth Correctional Facility in Baldwin.

The state House approved legislation allowing the prison to become able to house a wider range of correctional populations. Those could include county inmates, homeland security detainees or out-of-state inmates.

The bill was introduced by State Representative Goeff Hansen - a Republican from Hart. It now goes to the state Senate.

The prison about 65 miles north of Grand Rapids closed in October. Governor Granholm vetoed its funding -- saving the state 18 million dollars.
