BATTAMBANG, CAMBODIA - At least 8 prisoners and one prison officer were killed when dozens of prisoners attempted to escape from a prison in Cambodia, a police officer said on Sunday. The incident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning in a prison in Battambang province, about 291 km northwest of capital Phnom Penh, according to the officer who asked not to be named. The prisoners hijacked a prison officer as hostage and threatened to let them leave the prison, he said. When police surrounded the prison and fired tear gas, the head of the prisoners armed with a gun and a hand grenade detonated the grenade, killed eight inmates and also the prison officer, the prison officer added. The incident lasted about four and half hours. "The situation is under control. No prisoner escaped," he said. Prisoners stage frequent escape attempts in Cambodia. It was the second time a breakout occurred in Cambodia in a week. Last Sunday, 12 pre-trial detainees, including a former municipal police official, cut through the bars of their Prey Sar prison in Phnom Penh and escaped. |
