ANDERSON, IN - A prison officer attacked by one or more inmates at the Pendleton Correctional Facility is in stable condition.

A prison spokesman says Don Semler was injured in the face and head during the attack yesterday afternoon. He was taken to an Anderson hospital.

Semler was guarding a housing unit holding about 250 violent offenders when a prisoner or prisoners attacked him.

A prison spokesman did not elaborate on the nature of the attack or whether a weapon was involved. The prison didn't release Semler's age or hometown for security reasons.

The Indiana State Police and the Indiana Department of Correction's internal affairs staff are investigating the attack.
