DETROIT, MI - A statewide sweep caught 227 fugitives earlier this month. Those apprehended included 132 parole violators, 11 parole absconders and four who had violated probation following convictions on criminal sexual conduct charges, armed robbery, breaking and entering or drug offenses. The roundup, conducted from June 6 to 8, involved the Michigan State Police, the Michigan Department of Corrections and local and federal law enforcement. "Our message has been and continues to be clear: Violent probationers and parolees who do not meet their responsibilities will not be allowed to threaten the safety of our children, our families or our communities," Gov. Jennifer Granholm said in a written statement. Arrests were made in 37 Michigan counties, including 73 arrests that occurred in Wayne County. It was part of a statewide program called Project S.A.F.E. Street, the Statewide Apprehension of Fugitives Effort. At least 2,099 fugitives have been arrested by Project S.A.F.E. Street since it began in March 2003. In March, 214 arrests were made, including 125 parole violators, 39 parole absconders and six who violated probation. "Law enforcement will not stop until these offenders are no longer a threat to our communities," said Col. Peter C. Munoz, director of the Michigan State Police. |
