TRENTON, NJ - An undisclosed threat prompted New Jersey officials to search four state prisons and limit inmates' activities yesterday. Deirdre Fedkenheuer, spokeswoman for the Corrections Department, would not give details about the threat to New Jersey State Prison in Trenton, Northern State Prison in Newark, East Jersey State Prison in Rahway, and South Woods State Prison in Bridgeton. She said officials were trying to determine the threat's credibility and decided to search the prisons anyway. "We prefer to err on the side of safety," Fedkenheuer said. She said reduced inmate activity did not mean a lockdown. For example, she said, inmates could move around for medical or court reasons. Fedkenheuer said that she did not know how long the reduced activity would last, and that it was not uncommon when threats were received. Officials searched cells, common areas and recreation areas, among other places, she said. |
