JEFFERSON COUNTY, AR - According to Department of Correction officials two inmates who climbed over a fence at a combination state-county jail on Wednesday only got about 500 feet before being caught by officers.

Arkansas Correction Department spokeswoman Dina Tyler said the two climbed a fence in the recreation yard of the Jefferson County Regional Jail, opened a seam where a top covering meets the fence and slipped out. She identified them as 27-year-old Michael Brazel and 19-year-old Bryan Smith. Tyler said the two then scaled a 16-foot perimeter fence, presumably on their way to freedom.

But Tyler said that, every step of the way, officers were watching them through video cameras.

Brazel had just been sentenced to 12 years in prison on a theft charge and was awaiting transfer to the state prison system. Tyler said Brazel was sent to the Tucker Maximum Security Unit. Smith was returned to custody, where he is awaiting trial on a robbery charge.
