FORT EDWARD, NY - One inmate and four correction officers were hospitalized Thursday after a clothes dryer ignited at the Washington County Jail.
The small fire broke out in the laundry room of the Broadway facility at about 3:53 p.m. and was quickly extinguished, said Sheriff Roger W. LeClaire.

The officers were treated for smoke inhalation and released. The inmate complained of chest pains, LeClaire said. His condition was not released.
More than 100 inmates were sent out into exercise yards as part of the jail filled with smoke. Several State Police and deputies from Washington and Warren counties' sheriff's departments were sent to the jail to help watch inmates outside the facility.

LeClaire said 36 of the 153 people currently held in the jail had to be relocated to other facilities for a couple of days so that areas most affected by smoke may be cleaned.

The smoke damaged part of the kitchen and destroyed some food stored there. LeClaire said the kitchen cleanup was a priority to get the jail functional again.
The cause of the fire was being investigated but it was not considered suspicious.
