CHESHIRE, ENGLAND - Senior Officer Linda Horsfield, from the HMP prison Styal, received the 2006 Prison Officer of the Year award. Winner of the Suicide Prevention category, she was chosen as overall winner by Prison Service Director General Phil Wheatley, and is the first woman to win the award. "The reason I chose her as winner was because she was the best. For me, she epitomizes everything that is good about the Prison Service," said Wheatley. Horsfield was commended for her overriding commitment to her work on the Care, Support and Reintegration Unit at Styal, which was the subject of a BBC2 documentary 'Women on the Edge.' She played a key part in the making of the program, which showed her timeless patience working with prisoners in crisis. Her work helped individuals with acute problems improve their level of care, and she assisted them to address their own behavior. "I'm absolutely delighted to win, over the moon. It's been a complete surprise," she said. Christine Hepworth, Instructional Officer at HMP Leeds was awarded with the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her outstanding service to HMP Leeds and the Prison Service over the past 27 years. |
