KENT COUNTY, MI - The county jail will have a special unit by summer's end for monitoring inmates with mental health issues after three inmate suicides last year. The Kent County Commission on Thursday approved spending nearly $200,000 for converting an existing cell pod at the jail into the special 39-bed unit. Workers will replace bunks with cement slabs, remove door hinges, cover air vents with screens and install Plexiglas doors, among other measures. The most common form of inmate suicide is by hanging with a bed sheet strung to an obtruding object, such as a bed frame or door hinge, officials said. |
