OLYMPIA, WA - A new prison command within the WADOC will focus on the needs of female offenders and develop programs that encourage stronger ties between prison inmates and their families. McNeil Island Corrections Center Superintendent Alice Payne will take charge of the new command as one of three WADOC prison administrators. She will oversee the Washington Corrections Center for Women, and two minimum-custody facilities--Mission Creek Corrections Center for Women in Belfair and Pine Lodge Corrections Center for Women in Medical Lake. Nearly 1,300 of the state's 18,000 incarcerated offenders are women. "We need to help and encourage offenders of both sexes to meet their family obligations," WADOC Secretary Harold Clarke said. "Strong family ties are good for children and help reduce the risk that offenders will commit new crimes. In the long run, that makes everyone safer." Payne has gained a national reputation for programs at McNeil Island that encourage active involvement by incarcerated fathers in the education of their children and in other aspects of their lives. Family friendly programs are part of a growing effort within the WADOC to enhance the successful transition of offenders back into the community after their prison sentences have been completed. In keeping with the greater emphasis on successful re-entry programs, the WADOC chose Kaye Adkins, the former Eastern Washington Community Corrections administrator to develop, implement and evaluate family programs for offenders under community supervision across the state. |
