Fla. seeks death penalty for inmates charged in officer's death

The state will seek the death penalty for three inmates accused of killing a prison officer and an inmate in an escape attempt last year, State Attorney Steve Russell said last Thursday.
The decision comes about two months after a grand jury indicted Dwight T. Eaglin, Michael Jones and Stephen V. Smith on two counts of first-degree murder.
Investigators say the three attacked and killed prison officer Darla Lathrem with a sledgehammer June 11 as they tried to escape from the maximum security prison at Charlotte Correctional Institution in Punta Gorda.
Prisoner Charles Fuston died several days later from injuries he sustained in the attack.
The state's decision is rooted in the "brutality of the beating," Chere Avery, a spokeswoman for the state attorney's office, told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.
The defendants, already serving life sentences, are being held in maximum confinement at Florida State Prison in Raiford.
The men were on a work detail at the prison, preparing a dormitory. Lathrem, 38, armed only with pepper spray and a radio, was alone. Her bloodied body was found in a locked closet after Eaglin tripped an alarm on an outer fence trying to get out.
