Price soars for sick behind bars

CHARLESTON, SC - If anyone figures a run-in with the law will help them get free health care at the Charleston County Detention Center, then County Council wants them to think again.

Last year, the jail's health care bill topped $3.2 million, about three times the cost of meals. Council Chairman Leon Stavrinakis said the county currently pays for health care beyond what the law requires, and he wants that to stop.

"I think there's a lot of savings to be had here for the county taxpayers," he said.

Other council members agreed and voted this week not to sign a one-year extension with the Tennessee-based company that provides the health care, Correct Care Solutions. Instead, council voted to try to arrange a 90-day extension to give them time to figure out a strategy for making changes.

If the company doesn't agree, then the county will have to scramble to figure out what to do next.
