SPRINGFIELD, OH - Dozens of Clark County jail inmates are being kept in neighboring counties on an emergency basis because of major damage to the jail from likely caused by a broken or blocked pipe, the sheriff said. Friday night's flooding on the building's third floor streamed down to the administrative offices below, according to Sheriff Gene Kelly. Parts of the jail ended up with 3 inches of water and sewage. The flooding originated in the women's pod on the third floor, Kelly said. Inmates worked for hours scrubbing the floors and bedded down for the night in the chapel. Kelly has appealed for help from other southwest Ohio counties, and on Saturday 25 inmates were transferred to Miami County. Another 20 are expected to go to Logan County on Monday. The sheriff wasn't sure what caused the problem but speculated that crowding at the facility may be straining the plumbing system. The 25-year-old jail was meant to house 174 inmates, but on Friday there were 276, he said. County Commissioner John Detrick acknowledged that the jail is jammed but said flooding had occurred before when prisoners tried to flush items they shouldn't have. |
