SAN MATEO, CA - Jail overcrowding has become so bad in San Mateo County that some inmates may have to be released early. The men's jail, rated to hold 688 inmates, has seen its daily average soar to 920. That's 150% over capacity. "In our women's facility, the last weekend, a facility built for about 84 people and we had 160. That's 200% of capacity," said San Mateo County Sheriff Don Horsley who said he worries the court might put a cap on the number of inmates they can house. "The people who are sentenced to say a year in county jail could conceivable end up doing only about two days. You have to be able to house people in a safe and secure manner. The courts have ruled that if you don't have the facilities or the staff then you can't hold people in custody." Sheriff Horsley told KCBS reporter Mike Colgan that what the county really need is another jail. |
