A Tri-State jailer is behind bars after helping two inmates try to escape.
The escape attempt happened Saturday night in Hopkins County (Ky.), but the men didn't get far.
Police say when Hopkins County deputy jailer William Hurst and inmates Sam Wallace and Derek Early planned the big escape Saturday night, they had no idea what was in store.
"The jail was surrounded," said Kentucky State Trooper Lonnie Kavanaugh. "The surveillance was being conducted, so when the escape did occur, they were there to take the necessary actions."
Earlier in the week, an informant told jail officials about the elaborate plan, and that Hurst would be the one to help the prisoners escape.
"Bribery was involved, including money and drugs," Kavanaugh said.
Police say Hurst walked out the front door as if he were taking a break.
They claim he left the door slightly open, and moments later, Early and Wallace made their way out---but they didn't go far.
Early was handcuffed right away, and Wallace tried to make a run for it.
Wallace ran over to some tires and hid there for a few minutes, then ran back and hopped the fence in hopes he wouldn't get caught.
He did get caught, and police say you can bet he'll be serving more time than his current seven-year sentence for drug trafficking.
Early is also in for drug trafficking. He's serving a 13-year sentence.
Both men are now charged with second degree escape. As for Hurst, he's charged with second degree escape, tampering with physical evidence, and assault.
Police saw a car parked near the jail at the time of the escape attempt. It sped off and broke through a barricade.
Investigators think the driver was Wallace's girlfriend.
