SAO PAULO, BRAZIL - The Brazilian police controlled a riot in the Presidente Bernardes inmate center in Sao Paulo state this week. The rebellion started on Sunday evening when prisoners began to break objects in their cells. With three gas bombs and the aid of the dogs, the public security police checked the cells, finding knives made of broken glasses. This is the third riot in the Presidente Bernardes inmate center within less than a week. The other two took place after criminal Marcos Camacho was cross-examined. Camacho was suspected of stirring up attacks against penitentiary agents in Sao Paulo state. Four agents have been killed and two others wounded since Wednesday. In another development, the Penitentiary Agents Union in Sao Paulo decided to go on strike to protest their lack of life assurance. The agents in at least 10 inmate centers and detention centers throughout the state were walking out, and services to inmates such as sunbathing and mail delivery as well as visits from relatives have been suspended. Antonio Ferreira Pinto, the state secretary of Penitentiary Administration, will have a meeting with the union heads to discuss the crisis. |
