Corrections officials and police are searching for an ex-convict who allegedly kidnapped a state prisoner at gunpoint Tuesday morning.
According to authorities, Phillip Brown, 23, boarded a Department of Corrections' work-release bus and abducted Sokoni Lattimore, 28.
Police said Lattimore, an inmate at the Dinsmore Work Release Center, showed up at Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center on his own with injuries from a beating.
"He sustained several injuries," Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spokesman Ken Jefferson said. "He's got a laceration, his lip is split, he's lost a couple of teeth. He's hands are heavily bandaged, as well."
It was not immediately clear if Lattimer was released or escaped from the alleged abductor.
Brown was released from prison on Jan. 1 from the same facility after serving a sentence on drugs and weapons convictions. Investigators said the victim recognized the suspect when he got off the bus.
"Obviously (the victim) feared something ... he got back on the bus," Jefferson said. "The suspect then gets on the bus and actually escorts (the victim) off the bus."
The bus the state uses to transport work-release prisoners is not marked, the inmates are not restrained and wear plain clothes, and the driver is not armed.
Lattimer is scheduled for release on April 27. He's serving time on charges of drug possession, assaulting a law officer, and resisting arrest.
Late Tuesday, Lattimer was well enough to be taken to police headquarters for questioning. The search continues for Brown, who is believed to be armed and dangerous.
