CHEYENNE, WY - The Wyoming Department of Corrections was released this month from a four-year-old settlement agreement to improve conditions at the Wyoming State Penitentiary at Rawlins. After a 1998 investigation, the U.S. Department of Justice concluded that certain conditions violated the constitutional rights of inmates. As a result the WYDOC and the DOJ entered an agreement in March 2002 to to improve conditions at the men's prison in five areas -- medical and medical health care, security and protection from harm, fire safety and environmental health and safety. On July 5, 2006, U.S. District Judge Alan B. Johnson signed an order unconditionally releasing the WYDOC from the terms of the settlement agreement,on grounds the department had complied with the requirements of the pact. "For the last four years WSP's staff and contracted service providers have worked hard to achieve compliance with the agreement," said Bob Lampert, Director of the WYDOC in a release. "Their efforts are what led to this achievement." |
