SNYDERSVILLE, NY Once again, the Monroe County Correctional Facility has aced an annual state inspection covering everything from safety and security to housing to food quality and medical care. The county lockup in Snydersville achieved a perfect 100 percent following a three-day inspection last month by the state Department of Corrections, Warden David Keenhold told the Monroe County Prison Board on Tuesday. "It's exhausting to be able to get 100 percent," Keenhold said. "Trust me, it's a lot of work." The correctional facility achieved the unblemished score for the second time in four years. The lockup also scored 100 percent, for the first time, in 2003. The state inspector visited the correctional facility on June 12, 13 and 15. "It's a shared effort to make this whole thing happen," Keenhold said. "They look at everything. They talk to inmates. They talk to staff members." Keenhold praised the work of the correctional staff and said the facility benefits from good employee relations. The fact inmates also had some good things to say about the facility is a plus, he added. The Department of Corrections oversees 68 local prisons in Pennsylvania. The Monroe County facility currently housing 318 inmates is the ninth to earn a perfect score this year. Corrections Secretary Jeffrey A. Beard praised the determination of local officials to regain a perfect score. "The ongoing social, judicial and governmental changes impacting correctional operations require county prisons to be on constant vigil and to be adaptable.," Beard wrote in a letter to Monroe County Commissioners Chairwoman Donna Asure. "Monroe County Correctional Facility has shown itself to have both of these characteristics." The certificate of compliance will be formally presented by the state at today's county commissioners' meeting. |
