Former Bucks County (Pa.) Prison investigator Joseph Schuck brought his trial to a sudden conclusion Thursday when he agreed to plead guilty to charges that he sold quantities of the prescription painkiller OxyContin to an ex-inmate. Schuck entered the guilty plea as attorneys were preparing to make their opening statements in the 48-year-old Ambler man's trial. Schuck's guilty plea brought to a close months of legal wrangling that delayed the start of his trial numerous times since fall, when the former prison investigator was first scheduled to come to court. Schuck entered his plea before Bucks Judge Alan M. Rubenstein, who did not set a date for sentencing. He pleaded guilty to two counts of supplying ex-inmate Brian Flaherty with OxyContin, one count of using a telephone to conduct an illegal activity, and one count of using his position as a public official to break the law. Prosecutors dropped charges of extortion and bribery. Rubenstein permitted Schuck to remain free on bail while an investigation of his background is conducted by the Probation and Parole Department. Deputy District Attorney T. Gary Gambardella said Schuck faces up to 39 years in prison. Schuck, a retired Philadelphia police officer, was hired as a prison investigator in 2002. |
