Clashes continue throughout Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - Brazil's giant prison gang, the First Command of the Capital, showed Wednesday that it still operates outside the government's control, launching about 50 attacks throughout Sao Paulo state that targeted police officers at their homes, banks and supermarkets.

At least five people were killed in the attacks, which began late Tuesday. The gang, which has about 30,000 members, also burned at least 16 municipal buses.

Police believe gang leaders ordered the attacks to protest prison overcrowding and to retaliate for the arrest Tuesday of one of the gang's leaders.
