BRADENTON, FL - Authorities have removed all the inmates from the immigration detention center in downtown Bradenton. The move marked the end of a 10-year contract between the U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Manatee County to house immigration detainees waiting for their cases to go to court. In accordance to the agreement between the county and ICE, all the inmates were transferred to other facilities, either within the state or in other states, by June 26. ICE spokeswoman Barbara Gonzalez declined Wednesday to specify where the inmates were moved to. The Herald had reported in March that ICE planned to relocate the detainees. That process began in June, when fewer than 350 people were housed at the detention center. The U.S. Department of Justice in 1996 implemented the Florida Immigration Plan, which allowed the former Immigration and Naturalization Service to use the Manatee County jail near Port Manatee and the former jail in downtown Bradenton to hold immigrants awaiting hearings. ICE was created under the Department of Homeland Security, following Sept. 11, 2001. |
