TOWSON, MD – Eastern Correctional Institution, Maryland's largest state prison, and the biggest employer of the state's lower shore, officially opens a new 140-bed, minimum security housing unit today. The unit will be part of the ECI annex and consist of two dormitories. The project took 15 months to build and cost approximately $4 million.

The new unit will create 13 new practitioner positions along with 46 new jobs for ECI inmates, which will range from sanitation detail to road crews. It also will provide space for addiction groups, career development classes, addiction screenings, parenting classes, domestic violence workshops and other programs.

ECI holds approximately 3,170 inmates and has about 879 employees.
