Disturbance prompts lockdown

LUDLOW, MA - Hampden County jail officials said yesterday a July 6 disturbance involving 40 inmates resulted in a code red lockdown, the transfer of nine inmates to other facilities and an injured correctional officer.

Sheriff Michael J. Ashe said yesterday that the fracas started after several inmates became angry at the "disciplinary tone" of a staff member at the Hampden County Correctional Center.

Inmates overturned chairs, a card table and garbage cans and threw plastic boxes, spokesman Richard McCarthy said.

During the disturbance, a code red alarm was sounded, resulting in the lockdown of all 22 living areas in the jail. There have been just five code red alerts since the institution was opened in 1992, Ashe said.

A special operations team and other officers subdued some of the prisoners to end the disturbance.

"They (inmates) were taunting our staff, and our staff showed great professional restraint and decorumĀ in not overreacting to the situation," Ashe said.

At least 20 inmates were disciplined with 11 sent to a special disciplinary unit and nine transferred to other facilities.

Five went to Worcester County House of Correction, two to Essex County House of Correction and two to Middlesex County House of Correction, Ashe said.
