OLYMPIA, WA - Department of Corrections Secretary Harold Clarke has appointed Ron Van Boening as the new Superintendent of McNeil Island Corrections Center. He will assume his new duties August 14. Van Boening is currently Associate Superintendent at the Washington State Penitentiary, overseeing the medium security complex and minimum security unit. In 1988, he began service with the WADOC as an associate superintendent. He previously worked for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections as deputy warden and assistant superintendent, and was assistant unit manager and work release supervisor for the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services. He also was a probation and parole officer in Australia. McNeil Island, located on Puget Sound, houses 1,284 medium custody offenders. It is the only prison in the U.S. that first began as a territorial prison, then became a federal penitentiary, and finally became a state corrections center. It is also the last prison in North America located on an island accessible only by boat or helicopter. |
