Inmates escape on tractor

LISBON, OH - The getaway vehicle was John Deere green.

Actually, it was a full-sized John Deere tractor that two Columbiana County Jail inmates used to travel Freedom Road last Tuesday. The ride lasted only until 8:18 p.m., when they were captured at Echo Dell Trailer Court near Beaver Creek State Park, according to a Columbiana County sheriff's dispatcher.

Shawn M. Cunningham, 18, and Michael E. Armstrong, 28, both of East Liverpool, were trustees at the jail, entrusted to mowing the grounds. They left on the tractor at about noon to mow the sheriff's firing range across the street from the jail. At about 2:30 to 2:40 p.m., the maintenance department responsible for overseeing the work reported the two were missing.

They had dropped the tractor in a woods behind the firing range and stole a 2002 Kia about a half-mile away. Tips from people they were calling and friends led deputies, U.S. marshals, two St. Clair Township officers and a Liverpool Township officer to the trailer park, the dispatcher said.

When the authorities arrived, the men saw them, jumped from the car and ran into a woods, where they were run down.

Armstrong was serving time for possession of criminal tools and criminal damaging/endangering. Cunningham was being held on two counts of passing bad checks and one count of falsification. The charges are misdemeanors.

Now, they are charged with escape, a felony, and probably will be charged soon with two counts of grand theft auto, also felonies.
