Two men were arrested in Georgia a day after they escaped from a Columbia, S.C. prison program and forced a man to drive them across the state line, Richland County deputies said. Benjamin Nabors and Randy Turner were arrested at an Atlanta hotel Feb. 1 after leaving the Watkins Pre-Release Center the night before, authorities said. The man who drove the two fugitives escaped the men once they reached Atlanta and called his girlfriend, who reported the incident to police, Sgt. Chris Cowan said. Both inmates will face charges, said Corrections Director Jon Ozmint. "It's a foolish thing for an inmate to do," Ozmint said. "Unfortunately for them, they'll never be in an institution without a fence again." Watkins inmates are nonviolent offenders within 36 months of being released, according to the Corrections Department Web site. Nabors was serving a three-year sentence for robbery; Turner was serving a two-year sentence for obtaining goods under false pretense. |
