Richmond City Jail deemed 'exceptional'

RICHMOND, VA - Richmond City Jail has been unconditionally certified for successfully achieving compliance with approved standards for Jails from the State Board of Corrections, Sheriff C.T. Woody, Jr. announced yesterday in a statement.

Woody stated, "When I found out that the Richmond City Jail made 'exceptional' scores across the board, which was the jail's highest rating in nine years, I was proud of the hard work my staff put into this project. Impeccable records are what we are striving for."

Currently, the jail is reimbursed at a rate of $8.00 a day for local inmates and $14.00 per day for each Department of Corrections inmate housed in the Richmond City Jail, which totals approximately $340K per quarter. Because of the exceptional rating, the jail is now in line to receive full reimbursement from the state. Without an accurate Local Inmate Data System (LIDS) accounting, these costs could fall on city taxpayers.

According to LIDS records, two years ago state auditors found numerous records discrepancies in Richmond City Jail records when comparing the Jail's LIDS system with State information.

By compiling information from local jurisdictions like the Richmond City Jail, the state is able to forecast crime trends, track the impact of crime legislation and make policy decisions.
