| Sheriff requests more officers for new jail |

ELIZABETHTOWN, NY Essex County Sheriff Henry Hommes proposed a resolution providing for additional correctional officers for the new county jail. When Hommes was preparing the 2006 budget, he said he thought he would need 14 to 17 new employees to begin corrections training in August. This, Hommes said, would have allowed him to train officers at the present jail, while part of the staff would be trained at the new facility. A meeting with state Corrections Commission staff for the jail resulted in a recommendation to Hommes to staff the facility with 60 officers, rather than the 14 or 17 Hommes proposed. However, Hommes said after, “preparing figures, I took into account vacation, comp time and personal leave at this year's rate, I found that I would need 52 officers to cover the post assignments and leave time.” Read more.
