| Judge tells state to hire mental health staff |

SACRAMENTO,CA - In a further sign of how the deepening state prison crisis is going to affect taxpayers, a federal District Court judge has ordered that the state promptly hire more than 550 new mental health care staff to improve inadequate treatment for inmates. Under Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, an array of severe problems in the prisons has worsened. California's prison population has soared to nearly double the capacity, and the result has been a near collapse in many rehabilitation programs and services, and a special master to the courts noted that the prison suicide rate is soaring because of poor mental health treatment.
