A Calvert County (Md.) Detention Center inmate was injured by another prisoner in a fight that occurred when no corrections officer was present at a 24-hour watch post, authorities said last week. Richard Shifflett Jr., 36, suffered injuries to his face Jan. 30 after a fistfight with Don R. Wall, 34, another inmate in the maximum security section of the jail, the Calvert sheriff's office said last week. Shifflett was treated and released from Calvert Memorial Hospital. The fight occurred in the section's day room, an area that is supposed to be watched 24 hours a day by a corrections officer, said Robert W. Lusby, the detention center's administrator. But the fight went undetected by jail staff and was broken up by other inmates, Lusby said. Jail officials did not become aware of the fight until well after it happened, when a cellmate called for medical attention for Shifflett's wounds, Lusby said. Lusby said he did not know why an officer was not watching the day room when the fight occurred. Lusby and other sheriff's officials said they did not know what started the fight, saying the information was not included in a police report written about the altercation. Deputy Chip Allen, a sheriff's office spokesman, said the two men were arguing before any punches were thrown. Wall, who was not injured, has been charged with second-degree assault. Shifflett has not been charged. They are now being housed in separate sections of the jail, Lusby said. About 20 inmates live in the maximum security section of the detention center. Lusby said there have been no other major disturbances at the jail this year. |
