MONTEREY PARK, CA - The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has approved reopening the Sybil Brand Institute for Women as part of a $259-million plan to increase housing space in county jails. The plan, approved unanimously on Tuesday, would include the transferring of 1,000 female inmates from the Century Regional Detention Facility to Sybil Brand in Monterey Park. It would also involve construction of a new 1,024-bed women's center at the Pitchess Detention Center near Castaic. Sybil Brand has been shuttered since 1997, when it was closed for renovations. County officials are slated to return to the board in 60 days with the paperwork to begin the reopening of the prison. |
