Inmate suspect in puppy's death

Abuse from an inmate is suspected in the death of a 16-week-old puppy in the Tender Loving Dog Care Program at Mansfield (Ohio) Correctional Institution.
The dog began vomiting blood on Jan. 31, MANCI Warden Margaret Bradshaw said. She said it was given to the Ashland County Humane Society -- which provides the program with dogs -- and taken to a veterinarian, where it died.
The prison's Tender Loving Dog Care Program uses inmates to train dogs for adoption.
Bradshaw said the institution is awaiting a report from the vet on the cause of death.
"We've never had an incident where we've suspected an inmate of hurting a dog," Bradshaw said, adding that the suspect was not a dog handler, but was accused of hurting the animal by inmates at the prison's minimum-security camp.
Brenda Kauffman, board president of the Ashland Humane Society, said the dog was born at the prison after the institution took its pregnant mother.
"It's still under investigation, but the dog was injured by someone and it did pass away," Kauffman said.
Kauffman and Bradshaw are concerned the incident will put the program in a bad light.
"It's a good program, and we've gotten national recognition for it," Bradshaw said.
Kauffman said she left three puppies at the prison last Tuesday.
"It was just an unfortunate incident and one individual," Kauffman said. "The guys were just so upset about it. I used to be a humane officer, and I've seen a lot worse things out on the street than I have in there. It's just a wonderful thing for the inmates and the dogs and this does not ruin my confidence in it one bit."
