Five-agency sweep nets drug arrests

Members of five Mississippi law enforcement agencies knocked on doors in Holly Springs and throughout Marshall County last Tuesday in an effort to round up 27 drug suspects, according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson.
The massive sweep began at 5:30 a.m. By 9:30 a.m. 12 suspects were in custody and going through the booking process, he said.
Officers with the sheriff's department, Holly Springs and Byhalia police departments, the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics and Mississippi Department of Corrections fanned out looking for drug suspects, many of whom had been targets of a lengthy undercover operation for several months, Dickerson said.
"It's a massive roundup, the biggest we've had in many months," he said. "Some suspects were targets of a most recent grand jury setting in Marshall County where indictments were returned. The remainder were indicted months ago and the indictments were kept sealed until the roundup started today."
Defendants face from one to numerous counts of possession of a controlled substance and possession with intent to sell illegal drugs in the City of Holly Springs and Marshall County.
He said the jail was at near capacity level by mid-morning with a number of the indicted defendants likely to remain in jail until Thursday, Feb. 5, when they will be taken to Marshall County Circuit Court for arraignment.
Some suspects are likely to be found to have violated their probation with the state department of corrections and will be held in Marshall County until beds are available at Parchman, Dickerson said. Others already on house arrest with the department of corrections will be looked at by Corrections. Corrections will determine if those suspects have violated the conditions of house arrest and they will be shipped out, if they have, he said.
