AR pushes for drug courts

BENTONVILLE, AR - Now is the time to push for more money for drug treatment courts statewide, two judges who preside over such courts were told at a joint meeting of House and Senate Public Health committees Monday.

"This is a good example of a program where we can spend a little bit of money now and save a lot of money later on," said Rep. Tommy Roebuck, D-Arkadelphia.

The committees were meeting at Decision Point's facility in Bentonville. Decision Point is a substance abuse treatment facility financed, in part, by state taxpayer money.

The treatment courts put defendants through intensive counseling and frequent, random drug tests while insisting that they keep a job and stay out of trouble with the law. There are about 50 such courts in the state, said Circuit Judge Mary Ann Gunn, who presides over the Washington and Madison counties' treatment court. Gunn and Circuit Judge Jay Finch, who presides over a similar court in Benton County, were scheduled to answer questions about their courts' operations and needs.

Figures from the treatment courts show that costs per defendant per day are less than $6 in Gunn's court, she said. Of those entering the program, 86 percent complete it and, so far, only 8 percent have been arrested again... Read more.
