CEDAR FALLS, IA - Thomas J. Bonefas, 59, who retired from the 1st Judicial District Department of Correctional Services after more than three decades there, died Friday at Allen Hospital after a fight with cancer. Bonefas was a Vietnam War veteran, and military rites for his funeral will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post No. 49. At retirement, Bonefas was the divisional manager of facilities for the Department of Correctional Services operations in Waterloo, West Union and Dubuque. "He very much strove for excellence in the facilities ... and always received good accreditation when we were reviewed," said DCS Director Karen Herkelman. Read more.
