Brazil confronts prison gang violence

SAO PAULO, BRAZIL - Some consequences of the violence ordered by a powerful prison gang this week are starkly obvious: broken glass around several government buildings downtown, the twisted metal of crippled ATMs, smoldering carcasses of public buses in the suburbs.

But the invisible effects are equally perceptible to the people here, changes that Ricardo Ferreira feels when he slips into a navy blue jacket and tie.
