New jail named in honor of sheriff

JEFFERSON COUNTY, AR - The new Jefferson County adult jail that is expected to open by the end of the year will be named for former, long-time county sheriff W.C. “Dub” Brassell. The late Brassell served as sheriff for 22 years, until 1999 when he left office and was replaced by current Sheriff Boe Fontaine.

County Judge Jack Jones announced the decision at a meeting of the Downtown Rotary Club. Jones and Pine Bluff architect Fred Reed, who has worked on designing the 304-bed facility, discussed the construction.

“Right now, 55 percent of the roof is completed and within 30 days, that will be finished and the building will be weather tight,” Jones said. “They've started painting inside and I think we can meet the projected deadline in December.”

Reed said the new jail, being constructed between East Second and East Third avenues, from Convention Center Drive to Alabama Street, is expected to have a staff of about 55...Read more.
