LONOKE, AR - A developer who says he plans to open a 680-bed private detention center in January will need approval from the state before he takes in any inmates, a state prison official says. David Hamilton outlined his project this week to county sheriffs at a meeting of the Association of Arkansas Counties in Springdale. Hamilton, who was identified as the project's chief executive officer, said the center would open in Lonoke County and house non-maximum security inmates of city and county jails. Hamilton said the center would charge local governments $45 a day per inmate and also would offer transportation services. The state currently pays local governments $28 a day per inmate to house state prisoners awaiting space in its prisons. The new center, called the Central Arkansas Regional Detention Center, would help relieve overcrowding at the local jails, Hamilton said...Read more.
