| Security systems add safety |

THURSTON COUNTY, WA - Security at Thurston County Courthouse was markedly improved in the past week. Everybody who works and visits the courthouse is well served by the changes. Last week, a video system that links the Thurston County Jail to Superior Court was put to work. It allows criminal case arraignments and preliminary court appearances by inmates to take place without the inmate leaving the secure environment of the county jail. The defendants still have their attorney by their side, and all of their legal rights are preserved as the judge and attorneys conduct business. The security benefit from the $130,000 system is this: Jail workers will reduce by about 150 per month the number of times they have to escort inmates from the jail to the courtroom and back to jail.
