House for female ex-inmates still a go

BURLINGTON, NH - Plans are moving forward to locate a group home for released female prisoners on Cherry Street in downtown Burlington. The halfway house for as many as 10 women will be in the Varney House at 76 Cherry Street, near the north end of the Church Street Marketplace.

The schedule calls for a six-month construction period beginning in October to renovate the dilapidated house. The halfway house will open by spring 2007. The plan for the house was formed by a nonprofit coalition calling itself Northern Lights.

Coalition members include the Howard Center for Human Services, the Lund Family Center, Vermont Works for Women, Mercy Connections and others.
