SAN FRANCISCO, CA - About 430 prisoners in San Francisco's Depression-era jail located on the Peninsula are getting a new home Saturday. They will trade in temperamental toilets, chipped paint and the clang of metal-barred doors for state-of-the-art cell blocks with security cameras, carpeted communal areas, soothing teal walls and stainless steel fixtures. The gleaming new centerpiece of the San Francisco County Jail system is prepared to open this week after a legal saga, 2 1/2 years of construction delays and a fraud lawsuit against the building contractor that is currently pending in San Mateo County Superior Court.
